Roberts Genealogy - Eastern NC and SC
Welcome to my Roberts genealogy pages. I am interested in the Roberts families of Eastern NC, more specifically Dobbs, Wayne and Duplin Counties and nearby, also in Horry and Marion Co., SC. (I have another, unrelated Roberts line from Western NC and GA.)
Roberts was the 45th most common surname in the United States in 2000, and 50th in 2010.
My most recent Roberts ancestor is my 3rd great grandmother, Rachel Roberts (c1831-1870s), born in Wayne Co., NC, died in Horry Co., SC. She married William Edwards (c1826-c1897) in the late 1840s in Wayne Co., NC. They moved to Horry Co., SC in the 1850s. Rachel is a child of Richard and Rebecca Roberts.
Richard Roberts (c1790-1875) was born and died in Wayne Co., NC. He married Rebecca Hobson ca 1824 in Wayne. Richard’s parents are not proven, but based on circumstantial evidence, and lack of other options, I think he’s a son of Henry Roberts.
Henry Roberts (c1775-1831) was born in Wayne Co., NC. He married 1st to a Miss Nixon, who died ca 1805. He married 2nd to Zilpha Carraway ca 1805. Henry and most of his family moved to Franklin Co., AL in the late 1820s. He died there in 1831 when, tradition says, he was killed by a slave. Henry is a proven son of John and Nancy Roberts.
John Roberts (c1748-1803) was in Dobbs Co., NC in 1760s. Wayne County was formed from Dobbs in 1779 and he fell into the new county. I don’t know if he was born in the same area or if he moved there from elsewhere. John married Nancy (—) in the 1760s or early 1770s, presumably in Dobbs (now Wayne) Co., NC. He died in 1803. Nancy died ca 1814.
John’s parents are not known, though a book, Roberts-Allen Families, Merrit E. Roberts, Phd, Lompoc, CA 1985, takes the Roberts lineage back a few generations, but with hardly any documentation so I can’t really vouch for it. In the book, the author lists our John as a son of another John Roberts (c1722-aft 1780) and wife Tabitha. This may be accurate, but I’m not totally sure.
This older John is listed as a son of John R. Roberts (c1700-1765) and wife Hannah Webster of Carteret Co., NC.
I feel those last two generations *might* be accurate, but as noted, I’m not sure. However, what he lists beyond those two, I feel is almost certainly wrong so I won’t repeat it here.
