I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of Isaac Winfrey and Sarah, his wife.
Special thanks to Jim Cockerham and others for data shared on this family.
Isaac Winfrey was probably born ca 1735 or so, possibly in VA. The 1800 census shows him over 45 years old (born before 1755), and his oldest known son was born ca 1755/60, so I'm thinking ca 1735 would be a good estimate for Isaac's birth date.
Isaac Winfrey married Sarah --- ca 1755/60, presumably in VA. There was a marriage record for an Isaac Winfrey and Sarah Brown dated 25 May 1756 in Cumberland Co, VA. For years I was sure this was ours, but I'm not sure anymore. There are competing claims on that couple that would exclude them from being the same Isaac and Sarah that I am researching. Our Isaac Winfrey and his wife Sarah probably remained in VA until the early 1770's.
There was an Isaac Winfrey listed on the 1769 tax list in Granville Co, NC. He was taxed for 1 white, and 2 slaves. Our Isaac Winfrey owned slaves, so it is possible this is the same man. If he was in Granville Co, NC in 1769, he soon moved to the frontier out in Montgomery Co, VA before 1780.
It seems that our Winfrey family may have sided with the British during the American Revolution, or at least been sympathetic to them (i.e. Tories).
Jeff Weaver found records showing suspected Tories in the Upper New River area circa 1780. This list included the names of Isaac Winfrey and Caleb Winfrey (his son). Jeff states that the list was from the Lyman Draper Papers, and he said that the list was of people who refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia, either because they were Quakers (refused to take any kind of oath) or because they were Tories (loyal to the British authorities).
In 1780 (the time of the above list), the New River flowed through Wilkes Co, NC (now Ashe and Alleghany Counties), flowing north into Virginia into what is now Grayson Co, VA, but was then part of Montgomery Co, VA (Wythe County was formed from that part of Montgomery in 1789/90 and later Grayson was formed from Wythe in 1792/93).
So it would seem that the Winfrey's lived in old Montgomery (now Grayson) Co, VA in that timeframe. However, they had moved to Surry Co, NC by 1782 and lived somewhere between Mitchells River and Elkin Creek. I don't know if they owned land there or not, but this puts them on or near the Surry-Wilkes County border.
Isaac Winfrey was listed on the 1782 tax list in Surry Co, NC.
Isaac Winfrey was listed in Wilkes Co, NC for the 1787 tax list in Captain Hardin's company, and charged for 3 polls. (Meaning he had 3 taxable males in his household, which would include himself, and two sons Obediah and Job Winfrey).
Isaac Winfrey was also listed on the State census for 1787 in Wilkes Co, NC. He apparently had 8 slaves in 1787. Isaac's son Caleb Winfrey was listed in the next household.

"Isaac Winfree" was listed on the 1788 tax list for Wilkes Co, NC in Captain Hardin's company. He was only charged for 2 polls this time, probably indicating that his son Obediah Winfrey had left home.
On 3 Apr 1789 "Isaac Winfree", Nancy Winfrey, Caleb Winfrey, John Burch and James Bradbury all witnessed a deed between Thomas Wilmouth to William Owen Medlin for 150 acres on Big Elkin. Interesting how Isaac signed his name "Winfree", while his son Caleb signed his "Winfrey" on the same record. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B1 page 68).
On 3 Jun 1789 Francis Calloway of Wilkes Co, GA sold 275 acres to Isaac Winfrey of Wilkes Co, NC for land in Surry Co, NC on South Fork Mitchells River. Caleb Winfrey was one of the witnesses. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 426).
On 11 Aug 1789 Caleb Winfrey proved the deed of Francis Calloway "and wife" to Isaac Winfrey in Surry County Court.
Isaac Winfrey was still in Wilkes Co, NC for the 1790 census, even though he had land in Surry by this time. He was listed (on the published version) with a middle initial of "T". This is the only record I've seen showing him with a middle initial. The 8 slaves he had in 1787 were not listed with him in 1790.

For the 1800 census, Isaac Winfrey was listed in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. His son Obediah Winfrey was listed nearby, and his son Caleb was just two pages away.

On 23 Jan 1805 Isaac Winfrey deeded property to his son Job Winfrey. I don't have the details of this deed yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 124).
Isaac Winfrey was listed on the 1810 census in Surry Co, NC. His son Job was listed on the previous page. He had some "extra" people with him in 1810, who may be grandchildren or nephews or something.

On 17 Mar 1812 Isaac Winfrey "of Surry" sold several slaves in Wilkes Co, NC to Jenny Holbrooks (his daughter). A negro girl named Tame, a negro boy named Ben and another named Ashton. Witnesses were Job "Winfree" and Jesse Caudill. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book GH page 211).
Isaac Winfrey "Sr" was listed on the 1815 Surry tax list, and taxed for 100 acres on Mitchell's River. He had 0 white polls and 0 black polls. This means he was over the taxable age (I'm not sure at what age a person became non tithable).
On 15 Feb 1815 Caleb Winfrey and William Burch (Isaac's son-in-law) began administration of Isaac Winfrey's estate. The strange thing was that Isaac wasn't dead yet. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 107).
On 9 May 1815, an Account of the Estate of Isaac Winfrey and Sarah Winfrey, his wife, was made by Caleb Winfrey and William Burch, Guardians. This seems to say that Isaac and Sarah were living, but for some reason they were incapacitated. I can't understand any other reason for this. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 114).
On 13 Feb 1816 Another Account was made, showing a settlement with Isaac Winfrey's guardians William Burch and Caleb Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 127).
Also in Feb 1816, another Account was filed. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 135).
Isaac Winfrey apparently died by February 1817, for his Estate was settled then by his "guardians", yet Isaac was listed as deceased on this record. Also mentioned in this record was cash paid to Elizabeth Cook for keeping Isaac Winfrey, and also cash to Rachel Holbrook (daughter of Isaac, though not stated so in this record). (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 209).
Sarah, wife of Isaac must have died around the same time frame, as I find no further record of her.
I have very little direct proof for any children of Isaac Winfrey and Sarah, however, they had several children based on census analysis, deeds, and various other records. Circumstantial evidence is strong for all of these.
Jane "Jenny" Winfrey (c1765/70)
Caleb Winfrey was born ca 1755/60, presumably in VA. He married Nancy Bowles ca 1788, presumably in Surry or Wilkes Co, NC.
Caleb was one of the administrators of Isaac Winfrey's estate from 1815-1817.
Caleb was named in numerous records in Surry Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
Judith Winfrey was born ca 1760/65, presumably in VA. She married William Woodson Burch ca 1781 in Surry or Wilkes Co, NC. William W. Burch was a son of John Burch and Charity --- (Woodson) Burch. I'm also a Burch researcher, so see my William Woodson Burch page for more information.
Unfortunately, there were several men named William Burch in Surry Co, NC during those years, so it hasn't been easy to distinguish one from another in the various records. However, of great help was that this William Burch was a Revolutionary War pensioner, and his file contains some helpful information.
I have alot of data on this family, much of it shared with me by Jim Cockerham, Richard Hobgood and others.
I've seen no direct proof that Judith was a daughter of Isaac Winfrey, but since her husband William Burch was one of the administrators of Isaac Winfrey's estate (1815-1817), and the fact that she named a son "Isaac", and that she was married in Isaac Winfrey's house, then Isaac Winfrey seems a prime choice for her father. Refer to William W. Burch page for more information.
Jane "Jenny" Winfrey was born ca 1765/70, presumably in VA, or possibly in Surry Co, NC.
She married Ralph Holbrook between 1790 and 1795 presumably in Wilkes (or Surry) Co, NC.
Ralph Holbrook was listed on the 1800 census in Wilkes Co, NC. An older woman, possibly Ralph's widowed mother Mary, was residing with them in 1800.

Ralph Holbrook died ca 1809 in Wilkes Co, NC. His widow, Jane was listed as head of household in 1810.

I didn't find Jane Winfrey Holbrook on the 1820 census. It is possible she was residing with another family, or with one of her own children.
I didn't find Jane in 1830 either, but her son Ralph Holbrook had someone her age residing with him in Wilkes, so I'm sure it is her.
Jane wasn't listed in 1840 either, but once again, her son Ralph Holbrook had someone her age with him in Wilkes. It is most likely her.
I didn't find Jane on the 1850 census, but I was given a death date of 20 Mar 1854 for her by someone. I don't know where she was in 1850. I've checked the Wilkes Co, NC census a couple of times for her, and haven't found her yet. She wasn't residing with her son Caleb Holbrook in Wilkes, nor with Ambrose or Winfrey Holbrook, both living in Lawrence Co, KY in 1850, nor with her son John (in Wilkes), nor with Ralph, also in Wilkes. I'm not sure where she might have been. It is possible she was just missed on this census, or that her death date is wrong.
Obediah Winfrey was born ca 1765/74, presumably in VA, or possibly in Surry Co, NC. He married Lucinda --- ca 1795, presumably in Surry or Wilkes Co, NC.

Rachel Winfrey was born ca 1774/75, presumably in Surry (or Wilkes) Co, NC.
Rachel married William B. Holbrook between ca 1800 and 1810, presumably in Wilkes Co, NC, though it could be Surry Co, NC instead. They were listed on the 1810 census in Wilkes Co, NC.

Rachel was mentioned in one of the estate records of her father. In February 1817, Isaac's Estate was settled. Mentioned in this record was cash paid to Elizabeth Cook for keeping Isaac Winfrey, and also cash to Rachel Holbrook. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 209).

I have a death date for Rachel as ca 1870/80, but I'm not sure where I got that from. Presumably she is listed on the 1860 and 1870 census as well.
Job Winfrey was born ca 1774/84, presumably in Surry or Wilkes Co, NC. He married Elizabeth Kennedy (Canaday) in 1807 in Surry Co, NC.
