Nathan Jones (1775/1794 - aft 1820) of Brunswick Co., NC

Nathan Jones is a potential ancestor of mine, but I don’t know for certain that I’m even related to him. He could be the father of my ancestor Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810-1860s) but that is far from proven. The main reason I suspect a connection is that he lived in the same section of the county as Tabitha. Not only that, in 1820 some of his household was listed as “free colored.” Tabitha’s 1840 census entry shows her entire family as free colored, though the 1850 and 1860 census records show the family as white.
Nathan Jones was born between 1775 and 1794 per his age on the 1820 census of 26-44.

Nathan’s household is interesting. It seems to consist of two families, one white, one free colored. The free colored family could be relatives or perhaps live-in hired farm laborers. I’m only assuming that Nathan Jones, the head of household is the adult white male.
Some of their neighbors in 1820 are known to live in the same general area as my Jones family, thus my interest in Nathan as a potential father or relative of my Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810).
I didn’t find Nathan on the 1830 census in Brunswick. There is one in neighboring New Hanover Co., NC that generally matches the 1820 census Nathan. It could be the same person, but I have no way to know for sure.

Note how the 1830 enumerations work well with Nathan’s 1820 white listings, though not a perfect match. Also, there was no Nathan Jones in 1820 New Hanover, so that is more circumstantial evidence this could be the same man from 1820 Brunswick, though not solid proof of course.
I didn’t find Nathan Jones on the 1840 census in New Hanover or Brunswick. There was one in Richmond Co., NC but that’s a different man who was there in 1830 and 1820. There was one in nearby Robeson Co., NC in 1840, but he was there back in 1820, and still there in 1850 and 1860.
I found no court, deeds or other records for Nathan Jones in Brunswick Co., NC. He may have only lived there a short while.
I have no information on any children for Nathan Jones. His 1820 census entry suggests had as many as five children at that time.
