Welcome to my Jones genealogy pages. I am interested in the Jones surname in Brunswick and Columbus Co., NC. That area of interest may expand once I’ve learned more about my Jones ancestors. As of now I know very little.

Jones was the 5th most common surname in the United States per the 2000 and 2010 censuses. Being such a common name I have severely limited my research to the two counties mentioned above, primarily Brunswick.

My most recent Jones ancestor is my four times great grandmother Tabitha Jones, born 1809/1810 in North Carolina, presumably in Brunswick Co., NC. Tabitha married Cornelius Davis ca 1832 in Brunswick. They lived in the northwest corner of the county in a section that was annexed to Columbus County in the late 1870s. Columbus itself had been formed from Brunswick in 1808, though I don’t think my Joneses lived in Columbus until the annexation. Tabitha herself died before her section of Brunswick became part of Columbus.

I don’t know who Tabitha’s parents were. There was a James Jones, Henry Jones and Willis Jones in the very same section she lived in. I suspect they are all related to her, but I don’t know how exactly. James and Henry left the area ca 1803, seven years before she was born. However, Willis remained through at least 1812.

I strongly suspect that Ivey Jones (c1819-aft 1850) is a brother or otherwise closely related to Tabitha. He owned land next to hers.
