Simon Jones (c1752-aft 1850) and Savier — of New Hanover and Brunswick Co., NC

Simon Jones is a potential ancestor of mine, but I don’t know for certain that I’m even related to him. He could be the father of my ancestor Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810-1860s) but that is far from proven. The main reason I suspect a connection is that in 1830 his household was listed as “free colored.” Tabitha’s 1840 census entry shows her entire family as free colored, though the 1850 and 1860 census records show the family as white. This doesn’t guarantee any connection between Simon and Tabitha, but it’s worth noting.

Simon Jones was born ca 1751/52 per his age on the 1850 census (92). The same census shows he was born in North Carolina. That record shows his race as Mulatto.

Simon’s wife was named Savier per the 1850 census though it’s possible it actually says Sarier instead. Either way, it’s an unusual name. She was born ca 1777/78 per her age in 1850 (72). She was born in North Carolina. I don’t know what her maiden name was, nor when she and Simon married, though before 1820. The 1850 census shows her race as Black.

I did not find any Simon Jones on the 1790 census in eastern North Carolina.

In 1800 there is a Simon Jones in Bladen Co., NC, which borders Brunswick, so it could be the same man, but I don’t think it’s him as he’s not old enough, and he’s listed as white on this census. He wasn’t near any other Jones families.

There was no Simon Jones on the 1810 census in Brunswick, nor Bladen. The only possible match nearby was an S. Jones in Columbus Co., NC, which borders Brunswick. However, there were no adult males in that household, so “S.” Jones is probably a widow Jones, i.e. Sarah or something like that. The 1810 census is lost for New Hanover, unfortunately.

On 20 Dec 1817, William C. Kemp of Wilmington made a one year rental agreement with Simon Jones of the same place. The land was on the “Skirts” of town. Signed by William C. Kemp. Witnessed by William H. Halsey. (New Hanover Co., NC Deed Book Q, p. 263).

On the 1820 census there is a Simon Jones in Columbus Co., NC and another in New Hanover Co., NC. Both of those counties border Brunswick. The one in Columbus was still there in 1830 and after, so not the one we seek. The one in 1820 New Hanover was not found there in 1830, and was listed as free colored in 1820, so probably is the one we seek. He was not listed near any other Jones in 1820, though there was a David Jones on the same page at the top (Simon was at the bottom, thus many households away).

Simon is listed on the 1830 census in Brunswick. I think this is the same one from 1820 New Hanover. He is among a small group of free colored families, namely William Craig, Levina Smith and himself. I didn’t recognize any of the other neighbors so I’m not sure what section of the county they are in.

I can’t help but notice how Simon Jones has a daughter with him in 1820 and 1830 who is an age match for my Tabitha Jones. I don’t know that it is her of course, but it certainly could be.

I didn’t find Simon Jones on the 1840 census in Brunswick or New Hanover. The one in neighboring Columbus was still there, but that’s clearly a different man. I didn’t find any others nearby.

Simon was listed on the 1850 census back in New Hanover Co., NC. They are two houses from a family which has James Jones 23, black, residing with them. I don’t know how he might be related. I don’t think he’s their son as they had no males at home with them on the 1830 census. He could be grandson.

I didn’t find Simon Jones nor his wife on the 1860 census, so they may have both died by then, presumably in New Hanover Co., NC.

I found no court, deeds or other records for Simon Jones in Brunswick Co., NC. He may have only lived there a short while.

I found no deed or court records for Simon Jones in New Hanover Co., NC other than the 1817 rental agreement and one court listing where it mentioned his taxable property.

Children

The 1820 and 1830 census records for Simon Jones show he had a daughter born between ca 1806 and 1820, presumably in New Hanover County. I don’t know she might have been.

I’ve noted that my Tabitha Jones Davis fits there nicely, but I have no evidence at all that it is actually her.
