Jacob Lewis of Eastern NC and SC - Differentiation
[Lewis Home] - [Table of Contents] - Jacob Lewis
Note: This page is a work in progress.
There were several men named Jacob Lewis in eastern NC in the 1700s, namely in Chowan, Bertie, Craven (now Pamlico), Dobbs (now Greene), New Hanover, Onslow and Robeson Counties. Some of those may be the same man across multiple counties, for example, the Chowan and Bertie Jacobs are definitely the same person.
My ancestor is named Jacob Lewis (bef 1729-c1796) (died Robeson Co., NC). I’ve found records of him in Dobbs Co., NC and Robeson Co., NC as well as SC. In order to determine where he was before Dobbs and who his parents were I’ve found it necessary to research all of the other Jacob Lewises in order to figure out more about mine. This page is my attempt to distinguish them and provide a “Table of Contents” for them. Each has (or will have) their own page with documentation.
In several cases we have their original signatures or signature marks on old documents, so I thought that would be a sure-fire way to distinguish them from one county to another. However, almost all of them used a nearly identical mark, so that didn’t help as well as I’d hoped!
1. Jacob Lewis (c1682-1744) and Mary Keele of NC (Chowan, Bertie, Onslow)
