I (Marty Grant) am not related to Berry Hensley as far as I know.

Berry Hensley was born ca 1782/83 in Burke Co, NC (in an area that became Buncombe Co, NC in 1791 and Yancey Co, NC in 1833.)

Berry Hensley is a most likely a son of James Hensley Sr. The evidence is circumstantial, but very strong that Berry was a son of James Hensley. When James Hensley died, he only left three heirs, two of whom are proven to be Sibba Hensley and Milly Hensley Sprouse. In Yancey County deeds, they are both selling their 1/3 of James Hensley's land, and in both cases it is mentioned that the land bordered the land where Berry Hensley lived. This doesn't prove he was their brother, but is circumstantial evidence in favor of it.

Also, Sibba Hensley never married, yet did not appear on a census until 1840. Someone her age was with Berry Hensley in 1820 and 1830, and also someone the age of her child born out of wedlock. I feel strongly that this was Sibba residing with her older brother Berry. Also Berry named his oldest son "James".

All of the above is circumstantial, but strong, I believe. I have seen others list Berry as a son of Henry Hensley Sr, but that doesn't work for several reasons. I've never seen any evidence to back up placing Berry into Henry's family, but the evidence is strong to put him with James.

Assuming that I am correct in my analysis that Berry is James' son (and I think I am, but so far I've never seen anyone else make this same claim, nor has anyone commented on my theory, either for or against), then Berry would have been home with James for the early census records.

In 1790, Berry would have been about 7 years old, so would be in the "Under 16" age group, or born ca 1774/90. There were five Hensley households in Burke Co, NC in 1790, but only four had males under 16, so that means one of these could be Berry's family: Benjamin Hensley (c1730), Henry Hensley (bef 1755), Hickman Hensley (1759), and James Hensley (bef 1755). As mentioned before, I think James was Berry's father.

Buncombe County was formed from Burke in 1791, taking most of the Hensleys with it.

In 1800, Berry Hensley would have been approximately 17 years old, so most likely in the age 16-25 category (born ca 1774/1784). In 1800 Buncombe, only Henry Hensley (bef 1755), Hickman Hensley (1759), and James Hensley (bef 1755) had someone that age with them. Hickman can be eliminated from consideration due to his children all being known, and Henry can be eliminated due to his children from that age category being known. That only leaves James.

Berry Hensley married Elizabeth --- ca 1800/1804 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I've seen her maiden name listed by other researchers as "Littleton", but I don't know what the evidence for that is. In checking the 1800 census for Buncombe County, I found no "Littleton" families listed there that year, nor any there in 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840, nor any in Yancey in 1840. This makes the maiden name doubtful, unless he went elsewhere to marry her, or else her family just passed through Buncombe between census years and didn't remain there long. She was born ca 1786/87 in VA.

Berry Hensley was listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe County. He was listed next to his father James Hensley and next to Enos Edwards. Berry's brother-in-law Jesse Sprouse was listed two houses away (next to James Hensley on the other side).

Berry Hensley was listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe County. He was listed between William Anglin and Louis Briges (Briggs? or Bridges?). Henry Hensley Sr was just a few houses away. Berry had a huge number of people in his household. I think that one of the older women was his sister Sibba, and one of the young girls was Sibba's daughter. Berry also had three slaves listed, but had none in 1810, though his father James had three slaves in 1810, so apparently all of them were in Berry's possession at this time (further proof that James was Berry's father). There was also a woman age 45 and up (born before 1775) with Berry in 1820. This isn't his wife, nor one of his sisters, so other possibilities are his mother-in-law, or possibly his step-mother, if James had remarried after 1810. Of course it could be someone else instead.

Berry Hensley was still in Buncombe for the 1830 census. He still had a pretty large family. He also still seemed to have his sister Sibba Hensley with him (or someone her age). He also had a female age 80-89 (born ca 1740/50) with him, who may be the same person from 1820, perhaps a mother-in-law, or step-mother. Berry Hensley was listed between Joseph Rhea and William Anglin. Berry's brother-in-law Jesse Sprouse was just three houses away, and next to him (Sprouse) was William Hensley (c1800/10).

On 7 Apr 1831 John Gray Blount of Beaufort Co, NC (a huge land owner in Yancey County) sold 25 acres to Berry Hensley on both sides of Cainy River, and west side of Pine Swamp Branch. Witnesses were Thomas Gardner and Dillard Love. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 3 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

On 3 May 1832 James H. Poteete sold 199 acres to Berry Hensley, land on Cainy River, "James Hensley's old corner" was one of the landmarks. Witnessed by "D. Angel". (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 4 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

Yancey County was created in 1833 from Buncombe County, including the part where Berry lived.

On 3 Apr 1837, two deeds were made in Yancey, one between Jesse Sprouse and wife Millie, formerly Millie Hensley, to Thomas Gardner, and the other from Sibba Hensley to Thomas Gardner. In both cases, they were listed as heirs of James Hensley, deceased, and were selling their 1/3 interest in his property. In both cases, their land was listed as bordering that land where Berry Hensley "now lives", proving they were neighbors. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 216 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

On 8 May 1837, a deed between Thomas Wilson, Esquire, Sheriff of Yancey Co, NC and Thomas Gardner was for 100 acres of land, and 75 acres, on east side of Ales Creek. This land was sold as a result of a suit from Fall 1836 Court of Burke County against James B. Hensly, Berry Hensley and John Baily. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 233 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

The above record refers to a Court case against James B. Hensley (Berry's son), Berry Hensley and John Bailey, but it was apparently in Burke County, so probably lost with most of the other early Burke County records. However, this does show that James B. Hensley was associated with Berry, at least they were being sued together. Doesn't prove father and son relationship, but it helps.

Berry Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County, NC. He was listed between Martin Shelton and Thomas Wilson. He was just a few houses from James Hensley (c1795/1800). No other Hensley's were close by. Most of the "extra" people from previous census records were gone by 1840. Sister Sibba Hensley was listed as head of household. The older woman born ca 1740/50, perhaps a mother-in-law, was gone by 1840, probably deceased.

Berry Hensley and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. He was listed between Nathan Horton and Robert M. Holcombe. He had two of his apparent daughters residing with him in the same household, but both were listed with children and given separate family numbers. There was a James B. Hensley age 15 (born ca 1834/35) with him, who was a son of Susannah Hensley, apparently born out of wedlock. Jesse Hensley (c1804) was just eight households away.

For the 1870 census, Elizabeth was living with her son James B. Hensley, and Berry was next door with grandson Andrew Hensley. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I have no additional data on Berry and Elizabeth Hensley. They apparently died sometime between 1870 and 1880 in Yancey Co, NC.

Children

Berry and Elizabeth Hensley had quite a few children based on the 1810 through 1850 census records, at least 16 it would seem. Unfortunately, most of these children are still unidentified.

John W. Hensley (c1830)

James B. Hensley was born ca 1804/05 in Buncombe (now Yancey Co, NC). I have no direct proof that he is a son of Berry Hensley, but circumstantial evidence is very strong, including Berry having a son this age with him in 1810, 1820 and 1830, and Berry residing with James' son Andrew in 1870.

James was probably named after his grandfather James Hensley. I don't know what the "B" middle initial might stand for.

James B. Hensley seems to be at home with his parents for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census.

James B. Hensley married Nancy --- ca 1830/38 in Yancey Co, NC.

See their own page for more information on them.

Unknown Daughter (c1804/10). Berry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", or born ca 1800/10), and with him in 1820 (age 10-14, born ca 1804/10), and with him in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).

She was gone from Berry's household by 1840, so she either married or died in the 1830/1840 timeframe. I have no clues who this daughter might be.

Susannah Hensley was born ca 1808/09 in Buncombe (now Yancey Co, NC). She was apparently home with Berry in 1810 (age "under 10", or born ca 1800/10), and with him in 1820 (age 10-14, born ca 1804/10), and with him in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).

Susannah Hensley had a child out of wedlock (James B. Hensley) ca 1835 in Yancey Co, NC. This is proven by her living with James in 1880 and listed as his "Mother", and marital status of "Single".

In 1840, she didn't seem to be home, but she was still with him in 1850, so I suspect she was there in 1840 as well, but in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1810/20), which isn't an exact match, but close. It is possible she wasn't with Berry in 1840, but living with a sibling somewhere.

Susannah Hensley was home with Berry and Elizabeth in 1850 Yancey Co, NC, aged 41, and apparently single.  She was still with them in 1860, age 51.

Susannah was with the Ensley and Nancy C. McCurry family in 1870. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Susannah was living with her son James B. Hensley in 1880 in Yancey, in Pensacola Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Unknown Son (c1810/20). Berry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1820. Whoever this was, he was gone by 1830. That may mean he had died, or had married or moved out by then.

He wouldn't have been any older than 20 by 1830. There were a couple of Hensley's listed in 1830 who are roughly the same age as this unknown son, including a William Hensley (c1800/10) just a few houses from Berry. This could be this son, if born ca 1810 and not before. He was living alone with no one else in his household. I have no further data on this William yet, so I don't know if he could be Berry's son or not.

Other suspects in 1830 are William M. Hensley (c1810), Bannister Hensley (c1811), and Abraham Hensley (c1800/10). Between these three, and William (c1800/10), only Bannister and William M. Hensley are a good match age wise. Both could be considered prime suspects, especially since Berry had another son in this same age group who is also unaccounted for (see below).

Both Bannister (c1811) and William M. (c1810) named sons "Bacchus S. Hensley", perhaps a strong clue that they are brothers.

Both could be considered prime suspects, especially since Berry had another son in this same age group who is also unaccounted for (see above).

Both Bannister (c1811) and William M. (c1810) named sons "Bacchus S. Hensley", perhaps a strong clue that they are brothers.

Unknown Son (c1815/20). Berry Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1820 (age "under 10", or born ca 1810/20), and with him in 1830, age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20) and apparently still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).

Whoever this was, he was not home with Berry in 1850, so had married or died by then. There are a couple of Hensley's who can be considered suspects to fill this position. There is Andrew Jackson Hensley (c1818), but I think he is son of Henry Hensley (c1781), but have no direct proof of that. Another suspect is Wallace Hensley (c1818), but I think he is Andrew's brother. Both Andrew and Wallace had the right qualities. They were the right age, and they didn't marry until after 1840.

Elias Hensley (c1817) is the right age, but he married before 1840, and was listed on the 1840 census.

Enos Hensley (c1816) is the right age, but he married before 1840, and was listed on the 1840 census.

Silas A. Hensley (c1816) is the right age, but he married before 1840, and was listed on the 1840 census.

Those are the only suspects still in Yancey County in 1850. This child could have moved away, or died instead.

Unknown Daughter (c1810/20). Berry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1820, but gone by 1830. She either died or married between 1820 and 1830.

I have no clues who this might be.

Unknown Daughter (c1810/15). Berry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1820, aged under 10 (born ca 1810/20). She was still home in 1830, age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840, so married or died ca 1830/40.

I have no clues who this might be.

She was still home in 1830, age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840, so married or died ca 1830/40. Berry did have one daughter in 1840 age 20-29, or born ca 1810/20. I don't know if it was this one, or the younger one listed below.

I have no clues who this might be.

Unknown Daughter (c1815/20). Berry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1820, aged under 10 (born ca 1810/20). She was still home in 1830, age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20), and apparently still home in 1840, age 20-29, or born ca 1810/20. This could be the older one (c1810/15) listed above instead.

I have no clues who this might be.

Jemimah Hensley was born ca 1823/24 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. She was home with her parents in 1830, age 5-9 (born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840, age 15-19 (c1820/25).

Jemimah Hensley apparently had a child out of wedlock, born ca 1842, either that or she married a Hensley cousin who died before 1850. It is also possible that Hester J. Hensley (c1842) was not her daughter, but a niece or other relative, but she was living with Jemimah in 1850.

She was still home with her parents in 1850, in the same house, but listed with a different family number. She and apparent daughter Hester J. Hensley were listed together.

Jemimah was still home with her parents for the 1860 census. Her daughter Hester had already married by then, but was listed nearby.

Jemimah was still in Yancey for the 1870 census, with widowed (or divorced) daughter Hester and several younger children who were probably Hester's kids. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I did not find Jemimah on the 1880 census. She was not home with daughter Hester in 1880.

Unknown Daughter (c1820/25). Berry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1830, age 5-9, (born ca 1820/25), and with him in 1840, age 15-19 (c1820/25). She was gone by 1850, so had married or died ca 1840/50.

This could be Blanchey Hensley (c1827) who was with Berry in 1850. If it is her, then her age in 1850 is off by a couple of years. She was listed as 23 then, or born ca 1826/27. She had an apparent son named William Hensley, born ca 1846. She could be a single mother, or perhaps she was married to a Hensley who died between ca 1846 and 1850.

Blanchey Hensley married Morgan Done in Yancey County on 27 Apr 1852. "Done" might be the same as "Doan". I have not found any additional information on them yet. There were no "Doan" or "Done" listings in 1850 Yancey County, so I don't know where he came from.

Unknown Son (c1825/30). Berry Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1830, age 0-4, (born ca 1825/30), and with him in 1840, age 10-14 (c1825/30). He was gone by 1850, so had married or died ca 1840/50.

This may be George Hensley (c1826) who married Elizabeth McCoury. I have no proof that George is Berry's son, but he could be. See his own page for more information.

Unknown Son (c1825/30). Berry Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1830, age 0-4, (born ca 1825/30), and with him in 1840, age 10-14 (c1825/30). He was gone by 1850, so had married or died ca 1840/50.

I have no clue who this could be.

John W. Hensley was born ca 1829/30 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He was with Berry in 1830, age 0-4, (born ca 1825/30), and with him in 1840, age 10-14 (c1825/30). He was still home with his parents for the 1850 census, listed as age 20 (c1829/30).

There was a John W. Hensley in 1860 Yancey County, but I'm not sure if it is the same one, as there were several by this name. I've found a John Wesley Hensley in Union Co, GA in 1860 and 1870 and in Fannin Co, GA in 1880, who might be this same person, but I'm not sure if it is or not. I tentatively have identified this Union Co, GA John as the same one, but I'm not sure of that at all.
