Colbert Hensley and Eliza Stanton of Buncombe, Yancey and Madison Co, NC

Colbert Hensley was born ca 1760/65, probably in VA (perhaps Halifax or Bedford County), or possibly in old Rowan Co, NC (later Surry, now Stokes County).

Colbert is listed by some researchers as a son of "Robert Hensley", and I'm familiar with the evidence they are using for that. Several of Colbert's descendants filed Indian Claims (Gurion-Miller Index of 1907), and at least one of them listed Colbert as a son of "Robert" Hensley. I've never found any Robert Hensley that could be Colbert's father. This data was recorded in 1907, which was probably close to 100 years after Colbert's father would have died, so this is highly unlikely to be correct, though shouldn't be dismissed outright. One record for Jasper T. Hensley (born 1877) states his grand parents were Hickman and Nancy, and his great grandfather was Robert Hensley. This has to actually say Colbert, but was probably misread by whoever transcribed it, since we already have other sources showing Colbert as Hickman's father. This record may be the source for others listing "Robert" as Colbert's father. I've not examined these claims myself, and have only seen abstracts of them, so I'm not sure what else may be recorded there.

I believe it is more likely that Colbert is a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hensley and therefore a brother to James, Henry, Hickman, etc. He was often associated with them in early records.

If Colbert was a child of Benjamin, as I suspect, then he probably came with Benjamin from VA to Rowan Co, NC by 1768. They lived in the part of Rowan that soon became Surry Co, NC (in 1771). It seems that most of this family went to Henry Co, VA (which bordered Surry Co, NC) between ca 1774 and 1778 and remained there until the early to mid 1780's when they moved farther west in North Carolina to the area that is now both Yancey and Madison County. At that time, that entire area was encompassed by Burke County.

Colbert Hensley was not listed on the 1790 census, though he would have been between 30 and 35 years old then, but since he was not married yet, he was probably still at home with his parents. If he was home with parents, he would have been enumerated in the "over 16" age group (born before 1774). There was only one Hensley household in 1790 Burke Co, NC with someone this age with them (who was not the head of household), and that was Benjamin Hensley, whom I believe to be his father. In fact, Benjamin had 3 males over 16, one being himself, and the other two presumably being two sons (i.e. Colbert and someone else). All of the other Hensley households had only 1 male over 16, which in each case was, presumably, the head of household as named.

In 1791, Buncombe County was created from the part of Burke where most of the Hensleys lived.

Colbert Hensley married Elizabeth (or "Eliza") Stanton in Buncombe (now Yancey or Madison) Co, NC in the 1790's. She was a daughter of John Shelton Stanton (c1740/50) (per the research of Kenneth C. Wilde). Her maiden name is proven by the Will of her brother George Stanton (died 1851) who named her and several of her children in his Will.

In Buncombe County Court for July 1793, Colbert Hensley was named to be on a road crew to view, mark and lay off a road from Hintons Mill to Austin Choates on Ivy River. Also named were John Hensley, Harry Hensley and others. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes published in Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society Journal)

In April 1794 in Buncombe Court, Colbert Hensley was named to be on a road crew to view, mark and lay off the same road mentioned in July 1793. Also listed were his probable brothers: Henry Hensley, James Hensley and John Hensley and John Staunton, either his father-in-law, or brother-in-law. This listing mentioned that Hintons Mill was on Caney River. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes published in Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society Journal)

Colbert Hensley was listed on the 1800 census in Buncombe County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell who his neighbors were, nor where he lived exactly (or approximately).

Apparently, Colbert moved to Knox (now Harlan) Co, KY by 1803, as he was listed there on the 1803 and 1804 tax lists. In 1803 he was listed as "Albert", but 1804 as "Colbert". Apparently he didn't like Kentucky, as he was back in Buncombe Co, NC shortly thereafter.

Colbert Hensley was listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe Co, NC. He wasn't near any other Hensleys. He was listed between Martin Shelton and Roderick Shelton.

Apparently Colbert and family moved over into nearby Greene Co, TN in the 1810-1820 timeframe. Unfortunately, the 1820 census is lost for eastern TN, so I can't confirm that Colbert was there in 1820. However, his suspected son James was married in 1822 in Roane Co, TN, and Colbert's proven son Amos was married in 1825 in Greene Co, TN.

I don't know how long Colbert and family remained in TN, but they were back in Buncombe Co, NC by the time of the 1830 census. He was listed next door to his son Hickman Hensley and next to James Shelton. Colbert's sons James and Amos Hensley were on the next page, only about 17 houses away. The 1830 census record shows that Colbert's wife Eliza had died sometime prior, as no one her age was listed with him, unless she was mistakenly listed in the ca 1790/1800 age group. Since Colbert had no known daughter that age, it is possible this was a 2nd wife, or perhaps Eliza still, but listed in the wrong age group.

Yancey County was created in 1833 from the part of Buncombe County including the area where most of the Hensleys lived.

Children

Colbert Hensley and Eliza Stanton had several children per the census records. Some of them are proven by the Will of George Stanton (Eliza's brother), some are also proven by Indian claims made by descendants (Gurion-Miller Index 1907). Colbert's son Hickman had a large household for the 1830 census, including many people that could be his brothers and sisters (too old to be his own children). It is possible that all of these are children of Colbert as well. See Hickman's page for more on them.

Unknown Son (c1790/1800). Colbert Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1800, but he was gone by 1810, so had married or died by then.

Unknown Son (c1794/1800). Colbert Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1800 and 1810. Since Colbert hasn't been found in 1820 (probably in Greene Co, TN), I don't know if this son was still home in 1820. He was gone by 1830 though.

This is very likely James Hensley (c1795), based on various bits of circumstantial evidence. First, his age is a good match with Colbert's "son" from 1800 and 1810. Second, James married in 1822 in Roane Co, TN (which is next to Greene Co, TN, where I think Colbert was then, or perhaps Colbert was in Roane then). Third, James was next door to Amos Hensley in 1830, a proven son of Colbert. Fourth, James named one of his sons "Amos", presumably after his brother. Fifth, Amos and James both had children marrying in Greene Co, TN into the same Cutshall family.

None of this is conclusive proof, but it all makes logical sense to me. I'm not the first one to come to this conclusion, so that helps as well. Kenneth C. Wilde lists James as a son of Colbert also, and Kenneth's research is always very good.

James Hensley married Mary Ann Erwin in 1822 in Roane Co, TN, then moved back to Buncombe Co, NC. See his own page for more information.

This could be "John" Hensley who was supposedly a son of Colbert, based on Andrew J. Hensley's (a son of Hickman M. Hensley) Indian Claims (1907 Gurion-Miller Index) which stated that Hickman's father was Colbert, and that Hickman had brothers including Amos and John Hensley.

There is a John Hensley (c1796) who fits this age group, and might be Colbert's son, but no proof.

George W. Hensley was born ca 1800 somewhere. His birth year is based on several records. In 1850 he was listed as age 50 (born ca 1799/1800). I don't have an 1860 census record yet. His June 1862 marriage record lists him as 61 (born ca 1800/01). In 1870 he was 69 (born ca 1800/1801). The only way to reconcile all three records is by putting his birth in the year 1800.

George was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census. Since I don't have the 1820 record for Colbert, I can't be sure George was with him still (but probably was). However, he was not with Colbert in 1830.

George's record of birth place is confusing. He was most likely born in Buncombe (now Madison) Co, NC. However, his 1850 and 1870 census records both list Virginia as his birth place (unlikely), and his marriage record (2nd marriage) in 1862 lists his birth place as "Birk County, NC". (i.e. "Burke County, North Carolina"). This is three locations to choose from, either VA, Burke Co, NC or Buncombe Co, NC. I don't know which record to trust.

In any event, George is a proven son of Colbert Hensley. His 1862 marriage record (16 Jun 1862) in Upsher Co, VA (now WV) lists his parents as Colbert and Eliza Hensley. In fact, this is the only record we have that associates George with Colbert. All the records that I have for George are in Virginia.

Amos Hensley was born ca 1802/03 in Buncombe (now Madison) Co, NC. Amos was apparently home with Colbert for the 1810 census. Since I don't have the 1820 record for Colbert, I can't be sure Amos was with him still (but probably was).

Andrew J. Hensley, a son of Hickman M. Hensley filed Indian Claims (1907 Gurion-Miller Index) and stated that Hickman's father was Colbert, and that Hickman had brothers including Amos Hensley.

Amos Hensley married Arty Norton on 16 Oct 1825 in Greene Co, TN. They moved back to Buncombe Co, NC after marriage.

Hickman was apparently home with Colbert for the 1810 census. Since I don't have the 1820 record for Colbert, I can't be sure Hickman was with him still (but probably was).

Hickman's son, Andrew J. Hensley, filed Indian Claims (1907 Gurion-Miller Index) and stated that Hickman's father was Colbert, and that Hickman had brothers including Amos and John Hensley.

Hickman M. Hensley married Nancy Silver before 1830. For the 1830 census, Hickman had a few "extra" people with him that could not be his own children (too old). It is possible that all of these "extra" folks were his brothers and sisters.

Mary Hensley was born ca 1808/09 in Buncombe (now Madison) Co, NC. According to Kenneth C. Wilde, Mary was named in the Will of her Uncle George Stanton as being his niece, and a child of Eliza Stanton Hensley. I've not seen this record, so I don't know how it is worded exactly.

Mary was apparently home with Colbert for the 1810 census. Since I don't have the 1820 record for Colbert, I can't be sure Mary was with him still (but probably was).

Mary Hensley married Thomas Wilson ca 1825/30 in Buncombe (now Madison) Co, NC. Thomas Wilson was born ca 1806/07. I'm not sure where I got this, but I have Thomas as a son of George Wilson and Elizabeth Shepherd. I don't know what the proof of that is.

Thomas Wilson was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC, just a few houses from Lawrence Hensley (c1809) They were listed between John McIntosh and William Calloway. It would appear they were in the part of Yancey that didn't become Madison County (in 1851), unlike the rest of Mary's family.

Thomas and Mary and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. They were near several Hensley's including Fielding Hensley (c1813), Silas A. Hensley (c1816), and Bannister Hensley (c1811). Their next door neighbors were Daniel Holloway and James Reynolds. I don't have the 1850 entry typed up yet.

Unknown Son (c1815/20). Colbert Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1830 census. Since I don't have Colbert in 1820, I don't know if he was there back then.
