I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Hensley as far as I know.
John Hensley was born ca 1810/20, presumably in Buncombe Co, NC (now Madison Co, NC).
I don't know who John Hensley's parents were. There are several suspects to choose from.
John Hensley would most likely be home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census. In 1820 he should be in the "under 10" category (born ca 1810/20), and in 1830 in the age 10-14 category (c1815/20) or in the 15-19 category (c1810/15). That helps narrow down the suspects a little bit, but not enough to come to any conclusions.
In 1820, there were several Hensley's in Buncombe County, NC with a male under 10 (born ca 1810/20), including: James Hensley (c1780), John Hensley (1794/1800), Benjamin Hensley (c1790), Berry Hensley (c1783), and Harry Hensley Sr (bef 1755). None of the above is conclusive as to where John may have been living in 1820.
In 1830, John would be in either the age 10-14 category (c1815/20) or the 15-19 category (c1810/15). There were a few Hensley's in Buncombe with a male in one or both of these categories: Lewis Hensley (1784/90), James Hensley (c1780), J. B. Hensley (c1805), Berry Hensley (c1783), William A. Hensley (1798), John Hensley (1794/1800), Henry Hensley (c1781), Colbert Hensley (1760/65), and Hickman M. Hensley (c1804). Any of these could have John with them, or perhaps none of them did.
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from part of Buncombe County, including where most of the Hensley's lived. However, a few Hensleys were still in Buncombe after that, including this John Hensley.
John Hensley apparently married someone before ca 1835. I based that date on his 1840 census entry which seems to show several children born ca 1835/40. I don't know who John married, but one possibility to consider is Lucinda Hensley (c1820). See her own page for more on her and her family.
John Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Buncombe County, NC. Based on his neighbors, it is clear he was in the same neighborhood where Lucinda Hensley was residing in 1850, in fact they had many of the exact same neighbors. This was clearly in the part of Buncombe that became Madison County in 1851. John's next door neighbors in 1840 were Obediah Holcombe and Sally Hunter. In fact, Obediah was a next door neighbor to Lucinda Hensley in 1850, and that is one reason I think she was John's wife, or at least his sister.

I did not find this John Hensley on the 1850 census anywhere. As I mentioned previously, in 1850 Buncombe Co, NC there was an apparent widow, or single mother, Lucinda Hensley living in the precise same place that John was listed in 1840. She also had Obediah Holcombe as a next door neighbor, and many of the other nearby neighbors were the same as John's in 1840. This shows a connection between John and Lucinda, but I'm reluctant to say she was his wife, mainly because she didn't have any children older than 4 years old. John had four children born ca 1835/40 per the 1840 census (if they were his children that is!). Lucinda had no one that age residing with her, and her last child was only 2 months old in 1850, and she had one more after that, ca 1852, leading me to believe she was a single mother. In any event, she is connected to John in some way, since they lived in the same spot.
I have no additional data on John Hensley.
John had several children, per the 1840 census, but I have no data on them.
