Bladen Co., NC (formed 1734 from New Hanover)

           Bladen suffered several court house fires and most early records are lost, though some survive. Research is difficult here in the 1700s. Many Lewises there at that time.

           Aaron Lewis (1761-aft 1848) and 1) Mary Lewis, 2) Rhoda Faulk of NC (Bladen) and AL (Pike). Son of Josiah (1728).

           Abner Lewis (bef 1781-aft 1827) of NC (Bladen). Listed on a few land records, one of which shows him as Abner “Senr” father of Moses Lewis. It’s been suggested that “Abner” is actually Aaron, though I’m not entirely sure of that, but it would explain his absence from any census records under the name “Abner.”

Chowan Co., NC (formed 1670 as a precinct of Albemarle County, originally called Shaftesbury until 1685 when renamed Chowan Precinct. Became Chowan County in 1741.)

           Mullington J. Lewis (1780/90-1850) and ? of NC (Columbus, New Hanover). Seems very likely he’s part of Bladen Co., NC Lewis family.


Craven Co., NC (formed 1705 as a precinct of Bath County, originally called Archdale until 1712 when renamed Craven Precinct. Became Craven County in 1741.)

           Benjamin Lewis (bef 1738-aft 1761) of NC (Craven). Might be same Benjamin s/o Richard of Chowan. Not sure though.

Dobbs Co., NC (formed 1758 from Johnston. Discontinued in 1791 by splitting into Lenoir and Glasgow now Greene.)

           Court house fires in Lenoir and Greene Counties destroyed nearly all the Dobbs County records. This makes research in Dobbs very difficult.

           Jacob Lewis (c1682-1744) and Mary Keele of NC (Chowan, Bertie, Onslow) * They were already gone by 1759, but their former land fell into Hertford.

           William Lewis (bef 1766-1796) and Leah Harrell (m 1785) of NC (Gates, Hertford).


Johnston Co., NC (formed 1746 from Craven.)

           Two court house fires in the late 1800s destroyed nearly all the county records for Lenoir including the Dobbs County records which Lenoir had inherited. This makes research in this county very difficult.

           Unidentified Lewis married Milly Bird (d/o Isaac) who was dead before 1825. She married 2nd to William Morgan in 1825 in Robeson. I don’t think she’s old enough to be the widow Milly Lewis on 1810 census in Marion Dist., SC, though it might be possible?

           Ulley Lewis (c1788-aft 1850) and Elizabeth (—) of NC (Wayne, Sampson). Son of William (1761).
