Isaac Jones is a potential ancestor of mine, but I don’t know for certain that I’m even related to him. He could be the father of my ancestor Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810-1860s) but that is far from proven. The main reason I suspect a connection is that he lived in the same section of the county as Tabitha. Not only that, in 1810 his entire household was listed as “free colored.” Tabitha’s 1840 census entry shows her entire family as free colored, though the 1850 and 1860 census records show the family as white.

Isaac Jones was born before ca 1792, assuming he was at least 18 in 1810 when he was head of household on the census.

Unfortunately, the 1810 census entry is about all I have for Isaac at present. He was on the same page with “J. Jones” but many households away, so perhaps not in the same neighborhood. It isn’t certain who “J. Jones” is, whether James Jones or the other James Jones or John Jones.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):

6 free colored persons, no age or gender distinction

If we assume the six members of his 1810 household are himself, a wife and 4 children, then he might have been married early enough to have been listed back on the 1800 census. However, I found no Isaac Jones in the area other than one in neighboring Bladen County. That one, however, is a different person and was still in that county in 1810.

Isaac was listed in a grouping of other free colored families including: J. Lord, R. Martin, B. McAllister, Jacob Hays, B. Graves and Elizabeth Freeman. I found some of them on prior and subsequent censuses, but none near each other, so no clues where Isaac Jones might have been living exactly in 1810.

I didn’t find Isaac Jones on the 1820 census. There was one in neighboring Bladen, but it was likely the same one who was there in 1810, 1800 and 1790 and not the one from 1810 Brunswick. The next nearest one was in Anson Co., NC in 1820. That could be the same one as there was no Isaac Jones in Anson back in 1810. The one in Anson in 1820 was born ca 1775/1794 and was the only Jones in Steagalls District that year. Anson isn’t too far from Brunswick, so it’s possible this is the same Isaac, but I have no proof that it is.

I found no court, deeds or other records for Isaac Jones in Brunswick Co., NC. He may have only lived there a short while.

Children

I have no information on any children for Isaac Jones. His 1810 census entry suggests had as many as four children at that time.
