James Jones is a potential ancestor of mine, but I don’t know for certain that I’m even related to him. He could be the father of my ancestor Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810-1860s) but that is far from proven. The main reason I suspect a connection is that he had land on Livingston Creek which is where my Tabitha lived. If related at all, it’s probably more likely he’s an uncle and not her father since he appears to have left the area about seven years before she was born.
James Jones was born ca 1765/1774 per his ages on the 1800 census, 26-44 (1755/1774) and 1810 census, 26-44 (1765/1784). I don’t know where he was born, whether in the Brunswick County region or not.
I didn’t find James Jones on the 1790 census in Brunswick Co., NC. There were two in then neighboring Georgetown District, South Carolina. I don’t believe either of those are him, but certainly could be:
1790 Census, Georgetown District, South Carolina
p. 500 Prince Frederick Parish, James Jones 1-1-3-0-0
p. 507 Prince George Parish, James Jones 1-2-4-0-0
Both of the above seem to still be in South Carolina for the 1800 census, in Marion District, which was created from Georgetown in 1799. If those are the same two, then neither could be the same James who was in Brunswick.
James Jones is listed on the 1800 census in Brunswick Co., NC. In fact, there are two listed. The one on page 13 is near Richard Davis, who is probably the father of Cornelius Davis who married my Tabitha Jones. He is also near William Keith whose name comes up a lot in the area. No other Jones were listed near this James Jones.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):
1m 26-44 (1755/1774) James Jones (1765/1774)
1m 0-9 (1790/1800) Son?
1f 16-25 (1774/1784) Wife?

On 1 Feb 1800, James Jones was issued a land warrant for 100 acres on Dans Creek. It was described as including his own plantation, so it was the land where he already lived. The survey was dated 13 Oct 1800. Chain Bearers (often relatives) were Ezekiel Bryan and Jesse Brantley. This is definitely our James Jones because Jesse Brantley was his next door neighbor on the 1800 census. Dans Creek is in what is now Columbus County very close to where my Tabitha Jones Davis later lived. This places James Jones in the very same area.
On 13 Oct 1800, James Jones was issued another land warrant for 100 acres, this one on a Prong of Livingstons Creek, including his own plantation. This suggests he moved between February and October. Described as on the east side of Livingstons Creek, on a prong called Bullhead joining Thomas Newell and William Boyd’s lines. Chain Bearers were James Keith and Richard Davis.
On 1 Nov 1800, William Boyd sold 50 acres to James Jones in Brunswick County adjoining James Williamson’s land, originally patented to Samuel Watters. William Boyd signed. William Keith and E. Bryan were witnesses. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book D, p. 268).
On the same date, 1 Nov 1800, John Williamson deeded 100 acres to James Jones on a branch of Livingston Creek, on the south side of the creek, part of a tract granted to Samuel Watters dated 9 Apr 1770. John Williams signed (sic). Witnesses were William Boyd and William Keith. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book D, p. 278.)
On 21 Mar 1801, James Jones of Brunswick deeded a Negro girl named Dido to Caleb Davis of Town of Smithville for $225. James Jones signed. John Conyers witnessed. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book D, p. 268.)
The above deed for Dido might be the other James Jones because that James is listed a few houses from Caleb Davis on the 1800 census. I don’t know if Caleb Davis is connected to my Davis’s at all.
On 1 Oct 1803, James Jones of Brunswick sold 150 acres to Edward Harris. The land was on a branch of Livingston Creek, south side of said creek. Signed James Jones. Witnessed by Ez. Bryan, Joshua Newell. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book E, p. 146.)
The above appears to be the 100 acres deeded to him by him by John Williamson on 1 Nov 1800 plus 50 acres deeded to him on the same date by William Boyd.
On 5 Oct 1803, James Jones sold 96 acres to Ezekiel Bryan, described as Judge Moore’s line and Dans Creek Swamp, entered and patented by James Jones. Signed by James Jones. Witnessed by Benjamin Due and Solomon Taylor. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book E, p. 424.)
James Jones received a land grant of 96 acres on the south side of Dans Creek. The dates don’t quite match up. The warrant is dated 17 Dec 1803, but it was granted 18 Aug 1803, before the warrant. I may have misread one of those. It was described as joining Judge Moore’s land and James Lewis’s land. The survey was dated 5 Apr 1803 with Ezekiel Bryan and Gabriel Smith as chain bearers. Is this the same 96 acres he sold to Ezekiel Bryan on 5 Oct 1803? I think it is. If so, it was the last of his land in Brunswick, so perhaps he moved away around this time.
There is a James Jones is listed on the 1810 census in Brunswick Co., NC, I think. Unfortunately this census taker only used initials for everyone, which makes it incredibly difficult to determine who was who. He is listed on the same page with William Keith, so that does suggest it’s the same person. However, it might be the other James Jones instead. Isaac Jones is on the same page, but not near him at all. Isaac’s household consisted of 6 free colored persons. There is no older female at home with James, so apparently Mrs. Jones had died before 1810.

I didn’t find James Jones on the 1820 census in Brunswick. He either died before then or moved away. If the 1810 entry is the other James Jones, then “my” James Jones may have moved away after he sold the last of his land in 1803.
James Jones had one apparent son at home on the 1800 census, born ca 1790/1800. That son is gone by 1810, assuming the 1810 census entry for “J. Jones” is the same man. In 1810, J. Jones had one apparent daughter at home, born ca 1800/1810. That could be my Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810), but I don’t think it is.
Neither of the two children above are identified.
I strongly suspect that James Jones is closely related to Henry Jones (bef 1789-aft 1803) and Willis Jones (1784/1789-aft 1812) who lived in the same area and were associated with the same people.
