Hensley Census Records - 1784 Virginia “Census” of Hensleys

The loss of the 1790, 1800 and much of the 1810 census for Virginia is a tragic loss to researchers. However, beginning in 1782 the counties of Virginia began sending copies of their tax lists into the state each year. The personal property tax lists are a veritable year by year census.
Until recently these records were only available on microfilm, not counting the few that had been abstracted and published here and there. Now, many of these are available free of charge online via FamilySearch.org and for a small fee on BinnsGenealogy.com. Between these two wonderful sources I’ve been able to begin work on a year by year “census” of Hensleys in select Virginia counties.
There is no statewide index, nor are any of the counties indexed, so it required a lot of reading on my part to locate the Hensley entries. I’ve not read every county that existed each year, only those where I was sure there were Hensleys, or suspected there might be.
Although present day West Virginia was still part of Virginia during this period, I am not including those counties here. They will be listed separately on their own pages. Ditto for Kentucky which was still part of Virginia until 1792.
If I searched a county and found no Hensleys listed that year I’ll state that below. If a county isn’t listed, that means I didn’t read it, most likely because I didn’t know or suspect it would contain any Hensleys.
In the table below I'll include the tax list data using the original spellings. The last column will be comments or a link to the web page for that family or person. Please report any errors or omissions. If a county isn’t listed where you think Hensleys were present let me know and I’ll check it out if I can.
