Ivey Jones is almost certainly related to my ancestor Tabitha Jones Davis (c1810-1860s), but I don’t know whether a brother, nephew, cousin or other connection. Ivey owned land adjoining Tabitha’s on Dan’s Creek and Livingston Creek. That could be a coincidence but maybe not.

Ivey Jones was born ca 1818/19 per his age on the 1850 census (31).

He was born in North Carolina, though I can’t say whether in Brunswick County or elsewhere.

I don’t know who his parents were, though as noted, I suspect he is closely related to my Tabitha Jones, wife of Cornelius “Neal” Davis.

Ivey would have been an infant on the 1820 census, if even born yet. He would need be listed in the “under 10” age group (born ca 1810/1820). Only Nathan Jones had apparent sons that age on that census.

Ivey would have been about 10 for the 1830 census, so he could be listed in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/1820) or even in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/1825). John Jones had an apparent son in each of those columns, but somehow I don’t think John is Ivey’s father, but he could be of course. The only other Jones in Brunswick that year was Simon Jones, and he had no apparent sons at all.

On 18 Aug 1837 the Sheriff was ordered to detain Ivy Jones to address the complaint of Joshua Newell, “overseer of Livingston Creek from the mouth of said creek to Buck Hole.” The order didn’t say what the complaint was, but going by the Newell’s title herein, I’d say it has to do with road work.

Ivey Jones married Elizabeth E. — before ca 1838, presumably in Brunswick Co., NC. She was born ca 1819/20 per her age on the 1850 census (30), born in North Carolina per the same source. I don’t know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1840 census in Brunswick between Daniel Harvell and Ezekiel Smith. They are not listed near Cornelius and Tabitha (Jones) Davis on this census.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):

1m 20-29 (1810/1820)       Ivey B. Jones (c1819)

1f 15-19 (1820/1825)         Elizabeth E. (—) Jones (c1820) wife

1f 0-4 (1835/1840)              Elizabeth Jones (c1838) daughter

In September 1845 Brunswick Court, Frederick Hudler sued Ivey Jones for debt from 1 Jul 1842 for $20. Ivey Jones’s land was ordered sold to cover the debt. The land wasn’t described.

I didn’t find any deeds in Ivey Jones’s name so I don’t know where he got his land.

On 18 Dec 1846 the Brunswick Court issued an order levying the land of Ivey Jones being 30 acres on Dans Creek joining B. King. This was regarding a case of Joseph M. Gillespie and W. B. Robeson vs Ivey Jones, W. R. Hall & G. W. Hall for debt going back to 1 Aug 1842. From this it would appear that 30 acres of Ivey’s land was seized and sold to pay the debt owed.

On 10 Nov 1847, William Jacobs of Brunswick made a deed to Hunathan Peavy of Brunswick for land on Dan’s Creek, a branch of Livingston, described as joining Neal Davis and Ivey Jones. (Brunswick Co., NC Book O, pp. 324-325.)

They are on the 1850 census in Brunswick listed between Solomon Taylor and Travis Huffam, and about a dozen listings from Cornelius and Tabitha (Jones) Davis.

This was recorded in the Brunswick Co., NC Court Minutes for June 1854:

“Ordered by the court that John Browning be paid the sum of Seventeen dollars for acting as Coroner and for burying the Bodies of Ivy Jones and John Webb.”

I found nothing else related to his death. He was only about 36 then.

I didn’t find Ivey’s wife Elizabeth on the 1860 census. She may have died, remarried or moved away by then.

Children

Ivey Jones and wife Elizabeth had three children per the 1850 census.

1.         Elizabeth Jones (c1838-aft 1850). She was home in 1850 aged 12. I didn’t find her after that. She was probably married before 1860.

2.         Mary Jones (c1846-aft 1850). She was home in 1850 age 4. I didn’t find her after that. She could have been married by 1860, though only about 14 then.

3.         Joseph R. Jones (1849-1914). He was home in 1850, “Joseph” age 1. In 1860 he was with another family as “Joseph R. Jones” age 11. I didn’t find him in 1870. I found a Joseph Redding Jones in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana in 1880 and 1900. He died in 1914 and is buried in Beauregard Parish, LA. I’m not 100% certain the Louisiana Joseph is the same person, but it’s a good age, birth place and name match.
